Lexington Gets Downtown Dollars
The Nebraska Department of Economic Development has awarded Lexington $30,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to complete the Phase I portion of downtown revitalization projects. Lexington is using the funding to develop a downtown plan geared toward rehabilitating and renovating existing buildings to reduce and prevent future deterioration. The city will contribute $9,500 to the project.

Another Successful Scrap Tire Collection
The September 25, 2009, Free Scrap Tire Collection netted 157 tons of tires to recycle. Thanks to the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality for funding this event.

Lexington Utilities System is giving away free Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs). Come and get yours! Visit us as 406 E. 7th Street and say you read about this on the new Lexington website, and we'll give you a free CFL while they last. These CFLs come in three sizes: 15W (like a 60W incandescent), 20W (like 75W), and 26W (like 100W).

NIFA (Nebraska Investment Finance Authority) has just announced recently lower rates on all of its Single Family Programs to the lowest statewide regular program rates in their history. The rate for NIFA’s First Home Plus loan program is currently set at 4.45%. Lexington has earned the designation "Tree City USA" for the 13th consecutive year. June is a good month to plant trees. Report any trees you plant to http://www.nfs.unl.edu/retreenebraska.asp.


Downtown Revitalization Study Complete
The City has completed a Downtown Revitalization Study, conducted by RDG Planning & Design, and with the help of a grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. The 88-page study includes decades of improvement ideas, some of which may be tackled in the next couple of years, using $350,000 of DED Phase 2 grant money, and a 25% local match. Soccer Building Nears Completion
Building framework is well under way south of the new Soccer Stadium in Lexington's Optimist Recreation Complex (13th & Airport Road). When finished, the building will include restrooms, concessions, changing areas, and park maintenance space.


Annual 4th of July Fun Run
More than 100 participants ran, walked, and pushed baby strollers in Lexington's annual Fun Run on July 4. The starting line began at the Lexington Family Aquatic Center.


Family Fun Run and Swim
Lexingtons Community Fitness Initiative offers a activity to promote fitness and family. All ages are invited to run or walk the one mile around Kirkpatrick Memorial Park then enjoy free watermelon and swimming. The fun starts at 6 pm with registration at 5:45. Special Olympics Torch Run
Special Olympics athletes and runners jogged up Washington Street and stopped for a welcoming cerremony at the Dawson County Courthouse the morning of July 15. The runners are traveling across the country to raise awareness for the Special Olympics.


SW Paving Project
Work started July 19 on a long-asked-for paving project. Asphalt will be installed on what was previously gravel roads west of South Adams Street, on Elm and Spruce Streets, as well as one block of Ontario Street and one block of Price Drive. The project includes improvements to underground water and sewer lines.
